The key to restoring your credit is understanding it. There are multiple different scoring models, with FICO score 8 being the most widely used model. Your credit score in weighted on five distinct categories: payment history, credit utilization, type of credit accounts, new credit and length of credit history.
These categories carry specific weights so they affect your score differently. Payment history carries the most weight at 35%, credit utilization is 30%, length of credit history is 15%, credit mix or type of credit account is at 10% and new credit is also at 10%.
As you can see, paying your bills on time and your credit card or account balances carries the most impact on your credit score. Keeping your account balances below 30% is recommended for an ideal credit score. It is best to diversify the type of accounts that you hold as much as possible. Over time credit just like anything else may have some changes but not very significant ones.
